Air Traffic Demand Recovery Hit by Volcanic Ash Cloud
Geneva: The airlines association (IATA) on Thursday stated that the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland has caused the international passenger traffic to slump by 2.4%.
Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the International Air Transport Association stated “The ash crisis knocked back the global recovery – impacting carriers in all regions.”
The biggest impact of the volcanic ash cloud was on the European carriers as the airlines passenger traffic fell through 11.7 percent. In a critical note, while mentioning the way the European governments have handled this crisis situation, Bisignani stated, “The uncoordinated and excessive cancellations and unfairly onerous passenger care requirements rubbed salt into the European industry’s wounds.”
However, the cargo traffic has been less hit, it fell from 28.1 percent in March to 25.2 percent in April.
