FIFA World Cup 2010 kicks off in style
South Africa put on a spectacular show of music, dance and colour to welcome the FIFA World Cup 2010 in style. More than 90000 fans gathered at the Soccer City stadium in Johanusburg to witness history as the World Cup tournament was officially unveiled for the first time on the African continent.
Over 1500 performers took part in the opening ceremony which began with a millitary aircraft flyover. FIFA president Joseph Sepp Blatter and South African President Jacob Zuma also spoke at the event. Those without tickets went to various Fan Fests around the country, while the opening ceremony was broadcast to over 200 countries.
One prominant name missing from the World Cup 2010 opening ceremony was that of Nelson Mandela. The former president of South Africa played a crucial bid in securing the bid, but did not attend due to the tragic death of his 13 year old great granddaughter in a car crash.
Last night South Africa partied as performers such as Shakira and Black Eyed Peas helped kick off World Cup 2010 celebrations in Soweto.
32 nations will participate in the tournament. The first game between South Africa and Mexico kicks off shortly after the opening ceremony. More than 350,000 fans from around the world are expected to arrive in South Africa for the FIFA World Cup 2010 providing a major boost to the economy.
