Cricket: John Howards bid to become ICC Vice President rejected
Former Australian Prime Minister, John Howards bid to become the ICC vice president was blocked by six cricket boards, including India and South Africa. Howard was in line to take over as vice president from Sharad Powar – who will be taking over as president – next week and utlimately become President in 2012.
Howard was the canditate of Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC). However this setback means CA and NZC have to find a new nominee. Howards appointment was always in doubt, after officials from Zimbabwe raised concerns earlier this year – mainly due to the treatment of Zimbabwe when Howard was the PM of Australia.
However, Howard held a meeting with Zimbabwean officals earlier this month to sort out the issues and Zimbabwe were not of the contries that blocked him appointment today.
John Howard who is a self confessed cricket tragic, served as PM of Australia from 1995 to 2007. England, Australia and New Zealand were the only countries that supported his nomination .
