Hurricane Alex hits Mexico’s Gulf coast
Hurricane Alex made landfall, hitting Mexico’s Gulf coast with fierce winds upwards of 105 mph and heavy torrential rains.
The category 2 storm forced thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes in Texas and Mexico and has also halted the BP oil spill clean up effort. The storm is around 110 miles south of Brownsville, Texas according to U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Alex – the first hurricane this season – hit Mexico’s northern Tamaulipas state with winds upwards of 105 mph and drenched many fishing villages. Most of the residents were evacuated to an auditorium in San Fernando which will be their shelter for the next few days. However, many people do not have a lot of supplies..
Many oil rigs were also shut down as a response to the strom. The hurricane is pushing oil from the Gulf oil spill further away, and has also wrecked havoc as clean up crews were forced indoors due to heavy rains and lightning.
