Pakistan Floods Kill 1300, affected million
Islamabad, Pakistan – The worst monsoon floods in Pakistan have claimed more than 1300 lives and destroyed thousands of homes so far officials said Saturday. About one million people have been affected in north-west Pakistan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province), the worst hit in the floods. Geo News reported 90 highways have been damaged and the areas have been entirely cut off from the rest of the country.
Major General Athar Abbas said about 19,000 people have been rescued with the help of boats and helicopters by the Pakistani military. Some 2400 personnel is put to work to help the survivors.
Officials said the flood is worst since 1929 and with more rain forecast the crisis may increase. Wednesday’s Airblue plane crash near capital Islamabad was also due to poor weather in which 152 people died.
