Graeme Smith gives up South African T20 captaincy

South African Captain Graeme Smith has given up Twenty20 captaincy with immediate effect. He will remain in the top job in ODIs until the 2011 World Cup and then continue as captain of the Test team.

Speaking at a press confrence, Smith said, “There are several reasons why I have made this important career decision,”  “I am going into my ninth season of international cricket – eight of which have been as captain.”

He added, explaining why he had to give up some of his responsibility. “It is my intention to play for another five or six years and I know in my heart that I can only do that if I give up some of my current responsibilities.”

South Africa had a dissapointing Super Eights stage in this year’s ICC World Twenty20 in May. Considering the next T20 World Cup is in 2012, it gives enough time to develop a new leader.

Smith has been the captain of the side since 2003, and his highlight would have been taking South Africa to No.1 in test after beating Australia in their own backyard.

A replacement for Smith has not yet been announced. Botha and AB deVilliers are likely contenders for a promotion.
