Chanthu kills two people, affects 1 million

Two people were killed and 1.35 million affected by tropical storm Chanthu in southern China today. The estimated losses reached 2.2 billion yuan ($325 million) as Chanthu hit thousands of homes in Guangdong province.

The typhoon is moving towards four southern provinces, to western and central regions of China, President Hu Jintao calling for increased flood control and relief efforts.

Flooding in China has devastated thousands of houses, killed 701 people and left 347 others missing only this year, according to a July 21 statement issued by Ministry of Water Resources and the flood control office.

Since July 8, floods have killed 187 people and left 173 missing, according to the statement.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited southern China twice last month, showing support to the poor ones.
