Dozens of casualties in a mine in China
21 miners died yesterday after an explosion at a coal mine in southwest China, the BBC announces.
Another 10 miners were rescued or managed to escape. Five of them were hospitalized due to carbon monoxide inhalation.
The explosion occurred in a private coal mine near the town of Anshun, in Guizhou province.
Chinese mines are among the most dangerous mines in the world.
According to official figures, in 2009, 2631 miners died in 1616 mining accidents in China, with 18% less than the previous year.
In March 2010, 115 miners were rescued from a flooded shaft in Shanxi Province. Some of them stayed trapped underground for a week.
Authorities have accused the mine management of having rushed the production.
