56 dead in India train crash

at least 56 people have been killed in a train crash in North India

At least 56 people are dead after a speeding train collided into a stationary train at Sainthia station around 200 kms from Howrah. The accident occured at around 2 am on Monday morning and left almost 1oo people injured, some of whom were rushed to hospital.

Sources say that the Uttar Banga Express was travelling from New Cooch Behar to Sealdah when it collided with the Bhagalpur-Ranchi Vananchal Express at very high speed.

The accident comes just two month after a derailment that killed 145 people. That incident was balmed on Maoist rebels, and sabotage has not been ruled out in this latest accident. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who spoke to reportes at the scene said that she was “suspicious about the cause of the accident.”

Most of the people dead were travelling in second class compartments, which are usually at full capacity due to cheaper fares. A luggage compartment was also damaged as compartments were hurled over each other.

The arrival and departure times of the trains are under scrutiny and it is unclear why the train was speeding when it was due to stop at the station. An inquiry into the incident has been ordered.
