Deadly explosion at a mine in Russia
At least 12 people died and dozens are still trapped under the debris, following two strong explosions produced yesterday at a coal mine in Siberia, announced Tuesday.
According to Russian officials, rescue operations were suspended after the mine was filled with smoke and gas, with the possibility of other explosions.
“Rescue efforts would continue to send people to death,” she declared for Itar-Tass, region governor, Aman Tuleyev.
Forty-one people were injured in the blast in the four hour interval at Raspadskaya mine, Kemerovo region. The first blast was caused by the accumulation of methane gas. Authorities have not disclosed yet what caused the second event.
Fatal accidents in mines are common in Russia because of the damaged infrastructure.
The tragedy occurred at a time of celebration in Russia. Today, large demonstrations are scheduled in the Moscow dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the victory in 1945 against the Nazis.
