Arrested “prophet”
Indonesian Bakr Abdullah, aged 70, was sentenced to one year in prison for blasphemy against Islam.
The old man, who had claimed making two trips to heaven, was declared “prophet” by local media. He claimed to have arrived in Paradise in 1975 and then in 1997.
“The prophet” had about thirty followers, who accompanied him in a “pilgrimage” to the foot of mountain Rinjani, the main active volcano on the island.
Locals, offended by the message Bakr Abdullah was spreading contacted authorities. The prosecutor who handled the case ruled that the Prophet should spend a year and a half behind bars , but the court showed leniency for an old man with impaired health.
In Indonesia, a Muslim country, a maximum sentence of five years in prison is imposed for anyone showing “hostile belief” or proceeding deviant teachings to the six recognized religions: Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholicism, and Confucianism.
