Ukraine – broken into five pieces
President Viktor Yanukovych instructed the government to draft the country’s federation.
Minister for Regional Policies, Viktor Tikhonov, argues that the current unitary state is not responding to “modern challenges”, so decentralization is needed.
In an interview for the Ukrainian weekly “Gazeta in 2000′, Minister of Regional Policy in Kiev an advice prime-minister, Viktor Tikhonov, called for federalizing the country as well.
“I am an ardent supporter of the idea of decentralization and federalism,” said Tikhonov.
He recalled that in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century this idea was supported by two well known nationalists : Michael Dragomanov and Michael Gruşevski.
