Hungary parliament votes to halve number of MPs

The Hungarian parliament has approved on Thursday the change of the Constitution, according to which the number of deputies will be reduced to  almost  half.

The proposal came from the Fidesz party, the party that won the elections in April.

According to Khaleej Times, the number of Hungarian MPs will be reduced from 386 to 200 members.

13 additional members who are not included in the new issue will be minorities in Hungary since 2014.

Reducing the Hungarian parliament was one of the party campaign promises of future prime minister, Viktor Orban. The proposal was adopted with 306 votes.

However, his party has opposed a similar proposal submitted by the Socialists in 2009, when they were in power.

Any amendment to the Constitution requires a vote of at least two-thirds of all deputies, a threshold that Fidesz can pass, holding a total of 263 seats.
