Russia threatens Europe with a much disputed project.
A week ago, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin proposed merger between energy giant Gazprom and similar company in Ukraine, Naftogaz at Sochi.
“We’ll wait and see,” officials in Brussels announced. Buried in the euro rescue strategies and bureaucratic inertia, the Europeans forgot a crucial aspect: Gazprom is not just a mega-energy company.
The idea of a consortium headed to manage the energy destiny of Ukraine and further European countries dependent on Russian gas is relatively old.
At the 2002 memorandum signed by Vladimir Putin with former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma details on a colossal scale energy merger were put on paper. At that time Moscow plans had not materialized, but the idea remained tightened in Kremlin’s agenda.
