Teen sailor Abigail Sunderland alive and in high spirits

Abby Sunderland is alive and well
Teen sailor Abigail Sunderland is in high spirits after being located around 3000 kms off the coast of Western Australia this evening. The 16 year old was feared dead after two emergency beacon signals were activated last night and satellite phone communications were lost. Her father Laurence Sunderland told Australian Radio that Abby was ‘fine’
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority deployed a Qantas Airbus A33o this morning to help in the rescue mission. The plane made contact with Abby soon after reaching her last known location in Southern Indian Ocean. A Qantas spokesperson said she was contacted via radio and was OK.
Abby Sunderland’s yatch ‘Wild Eyes’ is damaged and the mast is reportedly broken after being knocked on its side many times. However it is sea worthy and Abby has around two weeks worth of food on board.
An elated Mr Sunderland said that ‘It’s huge, fantastic, exciting news.’ A resuce ship making its way towards Abby is due to arrive in around 24 hours, after which she will be rescued.
Earlier in the day, Mr Sunderland said her daughters fate was in ‘God’s hands’ and friends and family were gathering for a prayer service when news of her being located came through. Her brother Zac who also sailed solo around the world said that she had all the skills needed to take care of such a situation.
