First woman to become a priest in Italy
A married teacher becomes the first priest woman in Italy, after being ordained this month, reports BBC.
Mary Longhitano, a member of the Anglican Church said that he hopes to break stereotypes of ordination in the Catholic Church.
According to BBC, the event will spark debate among Catholics on role of women in the church.
Pope Benedict XVI opposes all priests women in the church. His predecessor, Pope John Paul II, had even banned official discussions on thistopic.
When seven Catholic women were unofficially ordained in 2002, they were immediately excommunicated.
Longhitano, who says he has always wanted to become a priest, accused the Vatican that it prevents women to pursue their vocation.
She hopes that her ordination to trigger a debate within the Catholic Church.
Some Catholics believes that such reform is necessary because of the declining numbers of believers.
An Austrian bishop stated this week that the church should consider the ordination of women.
