Apple Launches Safari 5 – Free Download

Just after the release of the new iPhone 4 at WWDC, Apple announced the new Safari 5 for Windows and Mac.

While Safari 4 focused primarily on cosmetic improvements like the Top Sites page, the new version focuses on standards compatibility, speed improvements, a new Apple-vetted extensions system, the ability to switch between Google, Yahoo, and Bing for default search, and a new feature that Apple calls Safari Reader.

Safari 5, the next version of Apple’s Web browser is to have a few more features improved:

  • The new version includes something called Safari Reader, “for reading articles on the Web without distraction.”
  • Performance is 30% improved.
  • You can choose Google, Bing or Yahoo as the default search engine.
  • There are both Mac and Windows versions.
  • The company says they are offering “improved developer tools,” with support for “more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies.”
  • The new version will be free to download from apple.com/safari, although it isn’t there yet.
