Apple iPhone 4: ‘Impressive’ but ‘as Expected’

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has unveiled the iPhone 4 at the annual WWDC and it’s the slimmest smarthphone yet.

25 per cent thinner than its predecessor the iPhone 3GS at just 9.3mm thick.

Similar to previous iPhone handsets — 50million sold — it can connect to WiFi networks, though Mr Jobs had some troubles at the launch in San Francisco. The large number of journalists and bloggers present who were using WiFi at the event disrupted his own presentation and he was forced to ask them to stop using it.

“You know you could help me out, if you’re on WiFi if you could just get off… well we’re having a little problem here.”
The device looks exactly like the prototype first leaked after the Apple employee accidentally left it in a bar.

The network problems faced by AT&T, however, could prove to be problematic for Apple, some analysts wrote.

“We expect U.S. sales growth … to lag prior launches as U.S. consumers increasingly focus on network quality,” said Mr. Reid of Thomas Weisel.

AT&T’s policy, which allows existing customers to buy a subsidized iPhone 4 if they sign a new two-year AT&T contract, “is a calculated move to lock in customers with two-year contracts prior to losing exclusivity” and “likely foreshadows a Verizon iPhone”, wrote Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore.
