Visualizing the BP Oil Disaster – Anywhere in the U.S.
Ever wondered how big the BP oil spill actually is? Now you can see it for yourself. http://ifitwasmyhome.com allows you to place the oil spill anywhwere around the world.
Users can then enter an address anywhere in the world and the site will lay the spill over that location on Google Maps.
The website is developed by Andy Lintner, he came up with the idea while talking about the spill with his wife Kristen. The site uses data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association to create a picture of the spill.
“She showed me a map of New York that was printed in the paper with an image of the spill overlaid on top. She commented that this still didn’t put it into perspective for her, since she wasn’t familiar with New York,” said Andy.
“That night I put together a quick image in Photoshop showing the oil spill centred on our own city. We were both shocked with the result and instantly realised the powerful message conveyed by seeing the disaster from a local perspective.”
Mr Lintner said he also hoped the mash-up could clear some people’s minds on how the disaster happened.
