Google set to challenge Facebook with Google Me
Google will be coming out with their very own social networking site called ‘Google Me’ if reports are to be believed. Google hasnt spoken about this yet, but the tech giant is known for entering new territories and has also shown that they are interested in diversifying – with products such as Google TV. The new social networking site is going to be a direct challenge to Facebook, which currently has over 400 million users.
Googles decision to venture into Facebooks domain may well be the biggest decision they have ever made. Just a few months ago, Google introduced ‘Google Buzz’ – with limited sucess- as a direct competitor to Twitter. Besides this they also own Orkut and other social services such as Google Profiles. If they are sucessful with Google Me, they could be a real pain for Facebook – and could even cause them to take things such as privacy seriously.
Google Me first came to the fore when Digg founder Kevin Rose announced it twitter claiming he had heard it from a credible source. Tech blogs and other sites soon caught onto this. Just what happens next remains to be seen.
