Arsenal to bid for Werder Bremen's Per Mertesacker‎

Arsenal are said to be preparing with a £10 million bid for German international centre-back Per Mertesacker. This is in case a deal for Everton’s Phil Jagielka cannot be reached.

Arsene Wenger was furiated earlier this summer when his counterpart David Moyes of Everton rejected a £14m offer for the Toffee’s defender Phil Jagielka. The Daily Star now reports that the Gunner’s chief is ready to give up in his attempt to sign the player.

Out-going William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre needs to be replaced by another centre-back. Wenger wanted then replacement to be Phil Jagielka but is considering ceasing his efforts to sign the 27-year-old and instead will turn to Mertesacker.

An integral part in his nation’s World Cup in South Africa by the towering German international, Mertesacker. He still has two years left on his current deal with Werder Bremen but may move if all things get into place before the season begins.

Wenger who is still looking to strengthen his back-line ahead of the new season has got one centre-back in the form of Laurent Koscielny from French club Lorient with a £10m transfer fee still will have to think about the other one.
