Aussie Samantha Stosur falters in French Open finals

Italian Francesca Schiavone defeated world No.7 and hot favourite Samantha Stosur in straight sets to win the French Open at Roland Garros. Having eclipsed Jelena Jankovic, Sarena Williams and Justine Henin in presious rounds, Samantha Stosur faltered at the last hurdle going down 6-4, 7-6. The victory also made Francesca Schiavone, 29 the oldest first time singles winner at Roland Garros.

However the 1 hours 38 minute battle was no easy picking for the Italian. Stosur started strongly, hitting the right spots with her serve, but the Italian was determined to put up a fight and she she soon brought out some nervous strikes from the Aussie.  The Italian capitalised on this and raced out to win the match after the set entered a tiebreak.

Samantha Stosur was widely tipped to end Australia’s French Open title drought of almost 40 years, and no Aussie women has won a Grand Slam title for 30 years.
