Rafael Nadal wins fifth French Open title

Rafael Nadal won the French Open title for the fifth time

Rafael Nadal powered through to his fifth French Open title after defeating Robin Soderling in straight sets. Nadal took the match 6-4 6-2 6-4  and made ammends for his defeat to the Soderling last year.

The title is only his seventh overall,  of which five have come at Roland Garros. This shows how dominant he has been at the venue in the past few years.

Nadal was the favourite coming into the match having won the past 21 matches on clay. However his last two encounters against Soderling did not provide fruitful results and he was detemined to turn that around.

Having lost last years final to Roger Federreer, Soderling was looking for an early advantage. He earned the first break point of the match in the fourth game, but he failed to capitalize on it with a failed backhand.

Nadal seized the moment and made the most of his opportunities including a break  in the fifth game and was very tight in defence. Soderling has his moments throughout, but he faltered at crucial stages and Nadal powered thorugh to win the match in two hours and 18 minutes.

An elated Nadal told the crowd that this was “the most emotional day in my career”. He also told Soderling “I played my best match against you. If not, it’s going to be impossible to beat you.”

Rafael Nadal is now one victory behind Bjorn Borg’s record six titles at Roland Garros.
