Atlantis Undocks From Space Station, Heads Home
After finishing the assembly operation on a new Russian module, the shuttle Atlantis undocked Sunday from the International Space Station.The station was loaded with 1.5 tons of NASA cargo, along with a Ku-band antenna, six solar batteries and more than a ton of other equipment and supplies.
28,792 pounds of equipment and supplies were delivered to the space station by the Atlantis astronauts; all cargo was carried back to Earth.
Kotov, Creamer and Soichi Noguchi plan to follow the Atlantis astronauts back to Earth in nine days, departing June 1 (U.S. time) aboard the Soyuz TMA-17 capsule for a landing in Kazakhstan to close out a six-month stay in space.The astronauts plan to install a final heat shield inspection Monday before packing up and testing the shuttle’s re-entry systems Tuesday.
