SM-3 system effectiveness questioned
Interceptor missile System Standard Missile 3(SM-3) that the United States intends to install in Romania, is not very reliable, having an efficiency of 10-20 percent, a study quoted by online edition of Daily “New York Times.
However this assessment is disputed by the Pentagon, says Telegraph.
According to experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Cornell University, missiles carrying nuclear warheads will only be removed from the path , not destroyed by the system.
“The system is very fragile and rigid intercepting nuclear warheads only accidentally,” explains Theodore A. Postol, former adviser at the Pentagon.
