Elephants eliminate heat through “hot spots”
Biologists concluded that pachiderms and not only adjust their body temperature through their ears or by bathing in rivers.
Researchers have discovered the secret of the elephants: pachiderms can cool via “hot spots” on their body.
The researchers, who have long been interested in how to manage elephants temperature change, have realized that by directing blood to these small areas of skin elephants can lose heat quickly.
They found up to 15 such points, except those located on the ears. The study shows how these areas extend while the temperature increases.
Typically, large animals tend to retain more heat, because, in relation to their volume, they have a small area for elimination.
Elephants are the most disadvantaged, not only because of the high temperatures of their habitats in Africa and Asia, but also because they lack sweat glands, which helps to cool other mammals.
