Belgium unity demonstration
Around 2,300 people demonstrated today in the streets of Brussels for Belgian unity in the context of the political crisis because of the language conflict which opposes the Flemish and Walloons, reports AFP.
“For Belgium”, they chanted, floating behind banners which were written in three official state languages (Dutch, French, German) and the message was ”Yes, we want to live together.”
People waved the flags of Belgium and displayed placards reading “No Regional fascism’. Some have distributed stickers with the message ‘Do not touch my country. ”
A similar demonstration took place in 2007, when 35,000 people showed up to support the unity of Belgium.
Belgian Parliament was dissolved on May 6th and on June 13th elections will take place at the end of which the Flemish and Francophone will renegotiate the conditions of political cooperation.
