India Vs Sri Lanka 1st test, day 1 – highlights and review
The light at the Galle International Stadium has the last say as the Sri Lankan batsmen cruised throughout the day, finishing with 256 runs for the loss of two wickets.
Captain Kumar Sangakkara was the star of the day scoring 103 from 145 balls, including 12 fours. He found a steady partner in Tharanga Paranavitana, who also scored a ton and finished the day unbeaten on 110.
The start of play was delayed due to a wet outfield, but when the players did get on the field, it was Sri Lanka who got the ball rolling to the fence. Dilshan and Paranavitana were ruthless in the first few overs, but Dilshan fell just when he was starting to looking dangerous.
Sangakkara then took it to the Indians and maintained a steady run flow. Sangakkara and Paranavitana put on 181 before Sangakkara was accounted for by Sehwag. Jayawardene is the other unbeaten batsmen, he is on 8.
The Indian bowlers were far from impressive. Mithun was the only specialist bowler who managed to pick up a wicket – his first in international cricket. Ishant Sharma leaked runs in his first couple of spells and Ojha also could not stem the run flow. Harbhajan meanwhile was tight, but he could not produce a breakthrough.
The pitch did not provide any assistance to the bowlers and only 68 overs could be bowled as play had to be cut short due to bad light.
