Salman Butt replaces Shahid Afridi as Pakistan cricket captain

Salman Butt has been named as Pakistan’s new captain following Shahid Afridis enexpected exit after the loss to Australia at Lords.

Afridi decided to quit test cricket saying he did not have the  temperament to continue playing the five day game. He was expected to play in the second test, but a side strain has prevented him from doing so, meaning the loss at Lords was his last.

Butt, who was Afridis deputy on the tour, was widely tipped to be named captain of the side. However the decision was not ‘automatic’ and the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed his appointment on Saturday.

The decision came after a meeting between the board, team management and some senior players. Kamran Akmal has been named as the vice captain of the side.

Butt’s first assignment will be the second test against Australia starting on Wednesday. He is confident of leading his young side and said that his role as a batsmen remains the same despite being the captain.
