Routine Lifting Can Be Beneficial for Your Back
A researcher from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine claims that frequent lifting does not damage the back.
According to Tapio Videman disc degeneration is considered the main origin of severe back symptoms and added that in contrast to common perception, disc degeneration is not caused by physical loading.
Physical loading might in fact slightly delay disc degeneration as it’s known to be good for the bones, muscles and tendons he adds.
One’s own body weight is the most prevalent source of physical loading. The study found that loading in the form of extra body weight did not harm the spinal discs. In fact it led to slightly lesser disc degeneration.
Videman concludes that routine physical loading is not harmful but beneficial within limits. People with fear of harming their backs due to physical loading activities should gradually start increasing their daily physical loads he opines.
