Romanian Communist Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and wife Exhumed for DNA Sample
December 1989 is a unique moment in history, when Romania’s communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu was removed in a violent revolution and left the capital, Bucharest.
Three days later, Nicolae Ceausescu and wife Elena Ceausescu were dead, having been executed by the Romanians. The couple were shot by firing squad on Christmas Day 1989 after a summary trial.
On Wednesday, the remains of their bodies were exhumed and DNA samples are to be taken in order to verify their identities.
The only Ceausescu family member left declared that the body exhumed from what was thought to be Nicolae’s grave was wrapped in a black, bullet-torn coat similar to the one shown in the television images of the original burial.
DNA analysis will take until next year and could still be inconclusive. The family is planning to organize a full funeral service if it gets a positive result.
