BMW and Volvo quit wagons
BMW of North America will not bring in the next generation of the 5-series station wagon. The redesigned 5-series sedan is on sale here in May.
Station wagons are no longer preferred here in the United States as buyers are switching to crossovers like Volvo’s XC60 and XC90, said Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. Volvo is also bearing in mind to end U.S. sales of the minor V50 wagon after 2011.
“We are following the customer,” Speck said at the New York auto show last week. “The reality is the size of the segment has declined tremendously.”
Volvo is providing the V50 with an additional year as there “is a bit more energy in the small wagon segment,” Speck said.
