Pop celebrity Katy Perry knows her competition and she’s out to get them with “Teenage Dream”, on Aug. 24. The singer and her team inform Billboard in the most recent issue that she has her sights put squarely on pop’s big three.

“We didn’t want to shy away from her alternative roots, but we also wanted a record that stood up against the biggest artists on top 40 radios,” says music exec Chris Anokute, who helped sign Perry.

“You’re competing with Rihanna, Gaga and Beyoncé, and all these artists have songs that play on multiple formats.”

Perry says that she required more of a beat for this album than 2008’s One of the Boys had. “I really love going to shows where I’m sandwiched between people, and you don’t know if the sweat on you is yours or the person’s next to you.

I love that feeling, and when I was on tour I would see that I was missing that a bit. It reached No. 1 on top 40, No. 1 on hot AC, No. 4 at rhythm crossover, it’s climbing up the AC charts, and it’s even showing spins at urban,” says Greg Thompson, executive VP of promotion at Capitol.

“That is a game-changer when it comes to defining the audience for Katy Perry.”
