China Traffic Jam to last until September

Unique in history, the 60-mile traffic jam near Beijing is said to be lasting until mid-September, officials declare.

As the traffic jam on the National Highway 110 reached the 10th day, local authorities sent hundreds of police officers to keep order.

Trucks carrying food or flammables are redirected around the main bottleneck.

Zhang Minghai, director of Zhangjiakou city’s Traffic Management Bureau general office said the situation won’t come back to normal until Sept. 17 when road construction is set to be finished.

Citizens along Highway 110 are taking advantage of what’s happening and try to sell the drivers packets of instant food from roadside stands.

Auto market sales in China increased for the first time last year, as Chinese bought 13.6 million vehicles, compared to 9.4 million vehicles in 2008. Beijing will have 7 million vehicles by 2015, according to the head of the Beijing Transportation Research Center,

This is also a cause of the epic traffic jam, but even though, the worst commutes are in Moscow, where drivers reported 2½-hour delays, on average, IBM suggested.
