Times Square bomb suspect admits role
U.S. Federal Police arrested a Pakistani man suspected of attempted bombing in Times Square yesterday, at JFK International Airport in New York.
Pakistani-born U.S. citizen Faisal Shahzad has admitted trying to set off a car bomb in busy Times Square and will face terrorism and mass destruction charges, Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday.
“Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans in one of the busiest places in our country,” Holder said.
Official sources stated that Shahzad lives in Sheldon, Connecticut. He was arrested while trying to flee to Dubai, officials said. According to CNN, the suspect was already on board at the time of his detention and his final destination was Pakistan.
According to federal authorities, at least three other persons close to Shahzad are being investigated in this file.
At least two videos with Taliban Pakistani leaders were made public, in which they claim the attempt. Official sources pointed out that no clear link to al-Qaeda or any other terrorist group was found. However, the White House described the attempted assassination on Monday as a clear act of terrorism.
