French parliament condemns Islamic veil
The French Parliament passed a resolution condemning the Islamic veil covering women, calling it “an affront to the nation’s values of dignity and equality”, reports BBC.
The resolution passed unanimously, although 30 of the Communist deputies left the hall protesting.
Legislation which will ban the wearing of Islamic headscarves in public to cover the face will be voted most likely this year.
Last month, President Nicolas Sarkozy called on the Parliament to debate the issue. He said the covering waves are oppressive for women and are not welcome in France.
Opponents say the ban on headscarves could stigmatize Muslim minority in France, and the State Council suggested that such a law could be unconstitutional.
French Interior Minister s that only 1,900 women wearing veils covering the face, a Muslim population of over five million.
There are several types of veils worn by Muslim women. The covering is called the niqab and burqa.
Niqab is a veil that leaves open the area around the eyes, but it can be worn with a separate eye veil. In France, the niqab is the most common variant.
