Hungarian dual citizenship stirs up Slovakia
The future intention of the Budapest Fidesz government to grant Hungarian citizenship to ethnic Hungarians living in neighboring countries has raised maximum pressure within the relationship with Bratislava.
After recalling the ambassador from Budapest, the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated on Monday that he will propose a law to withdraw Slovak citizenship from any person requesting Hungarian citizenship, according to publication “politics.hu.
It is a matter of double implication,a symbolic one and an electoral one. In Hungary, the law draft on granting dual citizenship was filed Monday by the right Fidesz party with a majority in parliament.
The measure, which will take effect from 1 January 2011, aimed at approximately 3.5 million ethnic Hungarians living in neighboring countries like: Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Croatia and Austria.
