Open windows or air conditioning?
Probably most have gone with the “open window” answer for the sake of fuel economy, obviously. But how right is this?
It is obvious from the outset that the answer to this question depends on several variables. First of all, when talking about air conditioning motor and compressor type, operation system and most importantly, the temperature are the issues to be considered .
When driving with the windows open, what matters most is the extent to which they are open ,the car aerodynamics and the speed.
Germans from Dektra Test Center took two Volkswagen models, Golf 2.0 TDI, and 110 PS and drove 800 km on the highway in each of them.
One of them ran with the air conditioning set to 16 degrees and the other one with open windows. The result? The use of air conditioning reduced consumption by 1.9% compared to the car that traveled 800 km with all four windows open.
