Tesla Motors to build electric SUV Toyota Rav4
Planning to sell the model in 2010, Toyota Motor teams up with Tesla Motors to build an electric SUV – Toyota Rav4 using Tesla battery technology.
“Tesla seeks to learn and benefit from Toyota’s engineering, manufacturing, and production expertise, while Toyota aims to learn from Tesla’s EV technology, daring spirit, quick decision-making, and flexibility,” the automakers said in the joint announcement.
After creating a first prototype for the small sport-utility vehicle, Tesla plans to build a new one for the next month, and also 30 – 35 additional prototypes to be delivered next year.
Toyota sold around 1,500 vehicles using nickel-metal hydride batteries similar to ones used in the Prius hybrid, said John Hanson, the company spokesman.
Toyota also announced they would be selling a small commuter electric car based on its iQ minicar that will have roughly a 50-mile range as well as a plug-in Prius, hybrid-electric vehicle in 2012.
