The pill celebrates its 50th anniversary
Yesterday 50 years were celebrated since the contraceptive pill was approved for use and just as long since the lives of millions of women worldwide have changed.
On the 9th of May 1960,U.S. authorities announced liberty of use of contraceptive hormonal pills used until then in various gynecological situations.
Over the next decade, pregnancy prevention method has been adopted in many countries.
The miraculous tablet appeared for different considerations, like changing social trends or fear of overpopulation in communist countries, in this last case, the pill often being used illegally.
Now, the contraceptive pill is one of the most studied drugs in history and also the subject of numerous ongoing investigations .
Since its use was approved, more than 200 million women worldwide have used the contraceptive pill.
“Ironically, these pills that grant women the freedom to decide when they become mothers, don’t always offer the same women information on the significance of their adverse effects ,” Dr. Irwin Goldstein for the Journal of Sexual Medicine stated.
