“Fire Ice” has blocked the operation in the Gulf of Mexico
The “Cap” placed over the leaking oil on Friday in the Gulf of Mexico, to retain the oil slick had to be withdrawn. This happened due to the formation of crystals on the walls of the device similar to those of ice.
Difficulties arose after installing the device: inside it a substantial amount of methane hydrate formed (also called fire and ice).
Now,the ”cap” of steel and concrete is lying on the ocean floor, about 200 meters away from the leaking oil. One possibility is BP recovery using hot water to melt methane hydrates or methanol could be used to dissolve it.
Suttles explained, however, that BP will try to install a new valve on the spill site. The ”Cap” with a height of 12 meters and a weight of one hundred tons is still considered the best way to stop the leaking.
