South Africa’s World Cup tenor dies

Siphiwo Ntshebe, chosen by Nelson Mandela to perform the world cup opening ceremony, who was a tenor fron a South African township, has died of meningitis.

Ntshebe was on the brink of international stardom after being selected to sing hope, the official anthem of the tournament.

He died in hospital yesterday, a week after contracting acute bacterial meningitis, his record label said. He had just finished recording an album for Epic records.

His death is tragedy for his family and his friends who believe in the power of music.
