Pakistan’s worst flood takes 800 lives
Pakistan is seeing its worst flood in recent years as death toll rises to 800. 312mm (12in) of rain had fallen over the last 36 hours in the north-west. Information minister for Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa Mian Iftikhar Hussain, (formerly North-West Frontier) province, announced the latest death toll.
People are left homeless in the districts of Swat and Shangla as several rivers burst their banks. Conditions deteriorated after 45 bridges were washed away in Swat alone.
Conditions are inaccessible for the aid workers who are trying to provide shelter, drinking water, ready-to-eat food rations and health care. The government declared a state of emergency in the region.
