British Museum: people evacuted in gas incident
Visitors in British Museum were evacuated shortly after 1pm, because of a gas incident. The cause is unknown, investigators still trying to determine it.
“The museum has been evacuated as a precaution” a police spokesman said.
“A few people reported a funny smell on the premises and had mild irritation to the throat and eyes. No treatment from paramedics was necessary and we do not know at this stage the cause of it.”
“Officers are currently in the process of finding out what it is.”
British Museum is no doubt capital’s most popular tourist attraction, and this kind of incidents are inevitable.
There were around 8,000 people evacuated, a spokesman of the museum said.
“It was a gas or chemical incident which was reported at approximately 12.30pm.
“The museum was then promptly evacuated, police conducted a full search and nothing was discovered.
“Police have now handed control back to the museum.”
The museum is set to be open as normal on Sunday.
