The head of the Spanish socialist government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero intends to increase taxes imposed on the country’s richest people, at an unspecified date after last week he announced austerity measures for the middle class.

“Most citizens feel that this effort (deficit reduction) should be higher for those who have more” Zapatero said in a news conference.

Increasing taxes will not affect, obviously, the middle class, which already bears a large part of the austerity measures, he added.

Zapatero said that the tax increase will take place when the government will consider the extent appropriate, the plan to reduce public spending.
