Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete crowned Miss Universe 2010
Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete has been crowned Miss Universe 2010 in Las Vegas on Monday night. Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps was declared the runner up, while Australias Jesinta Campbell came third.
The comepition is held every year and is watched by millions of people in almost 200 countries. The contestants have to walk down in a range of costumes including a bikini and a home town costume. They are also asked an interview style question.
22-year-old Navarrete was asked what she thought about unsupervised Internet use by Olympic gold-medal winning figure skater Evan Lysacek.
Navarrete said she believed that the ‘ Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time,” and that we must teach our children “values that we learned as a family.”
83 contestants taking part in tonights show were reduced to 15 shortly before announcing the winner. Miss USA Rima Fakih did not make the cut.
Navarrete replaces Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela who won the title in 2009 .Navarrete winnings include a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy, jewelry, clothes, shoes and an undisclosed sum of money.
