Free gay marriage in Portugal
President Anibal Cavaco Silva passed yesterday a law permitting marriage between persons of the same sex, AFP reported. But couples cannot adopt children.
This is the last stage before the law takes effect in the coming days.
Portuguese President announced his decision during a televised speech.
The document, adopted in February, amended the definition of marriage in the civil code, removing the reference “different genders”.
However, the head of state law precludes adoption by gay couples.
The decision comes days after last week’s visit of Pope Benedict XVI in Portugal.
The Pope has reaffirmed that marriage between gays is among “the most insidious challenges and the most dangerous today.
