Serena, a new victory in Madrid
American Serena Williams, leader of the WTA chain, won yesterday the longest match of her career qualifying in the third round of the tournament in Madrid.
It took Serena almost three hours and a half to exceed Russian woman Vera Duşevina (43rd worldwide) on clay in the capital of Spain, score 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5).
Williams had won the previous two clashes with the Russian without having to give up any set, but now she had to save a ball game t in the second set and review the tie-break 0-4 in the decisive site .
28-year-old American will play in the third round of the Madrid tournament, against the winner of the duel between Russian Nadia Petrova – head serial number 16 – and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
In another match played yesterday, Venus Williams (4) has outpaced the Russian Vera Zvonareva, 7-5 6-3 and will play against the Italian Francesca Schiavone, who defeated Austria’s Sybille Bammer in a 6-2 6-1.
