Iran: hanged for drug trafficking

Capital punishment was applied for an Iranian found guilty of drug trafficking.

The man was hanged in public two days ago in Ahvaz in southwestern Iran, according to the Fars agency quoted by AFP. He was caught with 1.375 kilograms of heroin on him.

Since the beginning of the year,  the number of people executed by Iranian authorities for similar offenses amounted to 64.

Seven of the victims were from the Kurdish opposition and paramilitaries accused of involvement in terrorist acts against the Islamic regime, resulting from information published in local media.

Besides China, Pakistan, Iraq and the U.S., Iran has one of the highest rates in executions.

Here, murder, rape, drug trafficking, adultery and robbery are offenses punishable by death.  290 people have received the death penalty last year.
