U.S.: “We will not abandon the Afghan people”
Hillary Clinton announced today that the United States will not abandon the Afghan people, despite the fact that the withdrawal of international troops is set to begin next year.
”I’ll be very clear. We will try to find a responsible transition and a controlled one bythe international military intervention in Afghanistan and will not abandon the Afghan people, “said Clinton, in the presence of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Karzai thanked the U.S. contribution to defeat the Taliban in late 2001. But he declared that international forces in Afghanistan must do more to limit civilian losses.
Currently, NATO is preparing for an operation in the southern province of Kandahar.
U.S. hopes to begin to withdraw troops starting with July 2011, but Afghanistan has experienced an increase in violence over the past year.
